Fingers of Science

I did not take these pictures. Well, I did take them, from the internet. For the past ten years I've been reading a science aggregator, on the weekends, looking for interesting articles, because I'm interested in science fiction. But something happened along the way. I noticed what I will call a class of "science imagery" that's used to illustrate "science articles" about new discoveries. This class of images, I wish maybe someone else could come up with a better name, it's when the scientist takes their discovery or their invention and holds it in between their fingers, and the camera zooms-in so we're looking at a close-up of said discovery or invention. Sometimes the scientist is in the background, a fuzzy face in safety goggles. Always they're wearing rubber gloves, and I get excited when I see certain colors of gloves, for example bone-white gloves, because that never happens. Sometimes it's just a picture of their whole hand not just their fingers. And sometimes it's not fingers at all but tweezers, which are like fingers, so it's close enough. The reason for all this? Not sure. This is memetics in action. I've looked at tens of thousands of articles over the last ten years. Maybe (300/wk x 50wks = 15,000/yr x 10yrs = 150,000). I'm not reading all of them, just the headlines, and I'm not looking at all the pictures, but my brain does see them, and this is what brains do, they see patterns, and this is a pattern, and it means something. What does it mean? I have no idea. Well I have ideas, but I'd rather let the images speak for themselves.
